What is the difference between shaker, slim shaker and flat panel doors?
A shaker door has a five-piece frame around a recessed flat center. A slim shaker keeps that idea with narrower frame pieces. A flat panel door, also called slab, is one flat piece with no frame. A raised panel door adds a shaped center to the frame. Each gives a different mood.
Innovation Cabinetry, a Tampa, Florida cabinet company, uses all four styles. The EliteCraft line has Craftsman shaker doors and Classic raised panel doors. The Urban line has shaker, slim shaker and flat panel doors. All are frameless cabinets. That means the cabinet box has no face frame. The door style is about the door only, not the box.
The company sells through authorized dealers. Use this guide to decide which style you want, then ask a dealer to show you real doors.
What is a shaker cabinet door?
A shaker door is a five-piece door. Two vertical stiles and two horizontal rails form a square frame. A flat center panel sits in the middle. The panel sits slightly deeper than the frame, which creates a shadow line around it.
ROC Cabinetry, a cabinet maker, describes it in neutral terms: “A shaker cabinet door typically features a five-piece construction with a recessed center panel surrounded by clean frame pieces.” That matches what Innovation Cabinetry describes on its color pages.
How EliteCraft builds a shaker door
The EliteCraft Craftsman line has Shaker White, Pearl White, Imperial Blue, Storm Gray and Seaside Dune. These have:
- Five-piece, solid wood frame doors with mortise and tenon joints.
- A multi-layer painted finish on doors and drawer fronts.
- Shaker-style frameless cabinets “with minimal detailing and a low profile.”
The brochure adds that doors and drawers “feature solid wood stiles and rails, with an MDF center panel, the preferred construction for painted wood.” See MDF for what that material is.
How Urban builds a shaker door
Urban has two kinds of shaker door. The painted shakers, such as Sage Shaker, Forest Green Shaker and Whisper Blue Shaker, use the same five-piece solid wood frame with an MDF center panel. The Urban brochure says: “Shaker door and drawer fronts feature a five-piece solid wood frame with an MDF center panel.”
The wood-grain shakers, Blonde Oak Shaker and Natural Oak Shaker, are different. The color pages describe them as “constructed from 3/4” environmentally friendly engineered furniture board with a thermally fused laminate (TFL) finish.” Read the TFL entry if the term is new.
What is a slim shaker door?
A slim shaker is a shaker door with narrower frame pieces. It keeps the recessed center but gives it a lighter, cleaner outline. Innovation Cabinetry uses the names “Slim Shaker” and “Skinny Shaker” for the same idea. See the slim shaker glossary entry.
The Urban line has three slim shaker colors:
The company describes the White version as “a fresh, uncomplicated touch” with “sleek, clean lines.” The page calls the door “Contemporary slim shaker-style” and says it is built from 3/4” engineered furniture board with a TFL finish. The Slim Seaside Dune page calls it “Slim Shaker-style frameless cabinets with minimal detailing and a low profile.”
The company does not publish frame width numbers for shaker or slim shaker doors on the pages we reviewed. Ask your dealer to place a shaker door and a slim shaker door next to each other. The difference is easy to see in person.
Why choose slim over standard shaker?
Choose slim shaker when you want a shaker feel with less visual weight. A narrow frame looks lighter on small doors and drawers. It also blends with modern hardware and flat fronts used in the same room. Choose a standard shaker when you want a stronger, more traditional frame.
What is a flat panel (slab) door?
A flat panel door is a single flat piece with no frame, groove or raised area. ROC Cabinetry puts it this way: “They use a single flat panel with no decorative detailing, grooves, or recessed sections.” Cabinet makers also call it slab. See the flat panel door glossary entry.
Innovation Cabinetry calls its Urban Cityscapes flat panel line “Bold, dramatic, with undeniable appeal.” The “European styling of this flat panel door is one of the hottest trends in interior design and will create a modern look for any living space.” That is a company claim about its own product.
What the Urban flat panel doors are made of
The Urban color pages describe the flat panel doors as follows:
- “Solid 3/4” Environmentally friendly engineered furniture board slab-style panel door and drawer fronts.”
- Full overlay frameless construction.
- “Invisa-edge banding” on Ultra White, which the page says gives a tight joint with superior resistance to heat, moisture and bacteria. See edge banding.
The finish varies by color. The Urban brochure lists high-gloss fronts for Ultra White, Harbor Gray and Bayport. Emerald and Raven have a matte, fingerprint-resistant lacquer finish. Bianco, Stone Gray, Modern Gray, Concrete Gray and the oak and elm colors have a TFL surface finish.
| Flat panel color | Finish (per Urban brochure) |
|---|---|
| Ultra White, Harbor Gray, Bayport | TFL lacquer, high-gloss fronts |
| Emerald, Raven | TFL lacquer, matte, fingerprint resistant |
| Bianco, Stone Gray, Modern Gray, Concrete Gray | TFL surface finish |
| Blonde Oak, Natural Oak, Umbria Elm, Black Forest | TFL surface finish (grain matching not available) |
What is a raised panel door?
A raised panel door has a frame around a center panel with a raised, shaped field. Eagle Woodworking, a door maker, states the conventional contrast: “a plain frame around a recessed flat center versus a frame around a center panel with a raised, shaped field.”
In the Innovation Cabinetry line, raised panel doors belong to the EliteCraft Classic collection. Our Classic door has “a luxurious and gracefully detailed center panel.” The two Classic colors are Classic White and Maduro. Maduro shares “the graceful, decorative lines of our American Heritage cabinets with a raised panel.” The Classic White tear sheet adds a glass front option, with glass and clips not included.
The raised panel gives more shadow and more contour. It suits traditional and formal kitchens. It has more places for dust to settle than a flat panel does.
Which door style suits which kitchen?
Match the door to your room’s character, not to a trend. A shaker door is the safe choice for most homes. A slim shaker suits a clean contemporary kitchen. A flat panel door suits a minimal or European-style kitchen. A raised panel door suits a traditional or formal one.
| Your kitchen | Door style to start with | Colors to see |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional or farmhouse | Shaker | Shaker White, Pearl White |
| Formal or classic | Raised panel | Classic White, Maduro |
| Transitional | Shaker | Storm Gray, Sage Shaker |
| Contemporary, light | Slim shaker | White Slim Shaker, Slim Seaside Dune |
| Modern or minimal | Flat panel | Ultra White, Raven, Bianco |
| Warm and natural | Wood-grain shaker or slab | Natural Oak Shaker, Blonde Oak |
| Bold color | Shaker or flat panel | Imperial Blue, Forest Green Shaker, Emerald |
Color changes the effect of any door. For help with color, read the guide on choosing kitchen cabinet colors and open the color gallery. The kitchen cabinet styles and colors pillar page covers both topics together.
How do door styles affect cleaning and care?
Flat panel doors are the easiest to wipe clean. Shaker doors are simple but have a small ridge where the frame meets the center. Raised panel doors have the most contours. Eagle Woodworking notes that shaker “frame-to-panel step still collects dust” and that raised panels have “more contours.”
Innovation Cabinetry’s care sheet for wood cabinets gives general guidance. It says “A soft cotton cloth dampened with warm water is usually sufficient.” It advises a mild dish liquid in warm water, or a mild all-purpose cleaner that does not contain ammonia or silicone. It says waxing is not recommended. It also warns that stronger products may damage or discolor the finish and may void your warranty.
Painted wood doors can show a small open joint line where wood moves with humidity. The company’s catalog says this is not a defect. Shaker and raised panel painted doors have more joints than a flat panel, so you may notice it there first.
Do all door styles use the same cabinet box?
Within a line, yes. The door style changes the front, not the box. Urban cabinets use a 3/4” white plywood box. EliteCraft cabinets use 3/4” furniture-grade plywood. Doors close with 6-way adjustable soft-close hinges. See the soft-close hinge entry.
Both lines are full overlay frameless cabinets. The doors cover the box front edge to edge, which gives you full access to the inside. The guide on full overlay and full access cabinets explains why this matters for drawers.
What should you ask a dealer about doors?
Ask about the parts that the style name does not tell you. A style name gives the shape of the door. It does not give the frame width, the panel material or the finish. Bring this short list to your dealer.
- What is the frame width of this shaker or slim shaker door?
- Is the center panel MDF, plywood or engineered board?
- Is the finish painted, TFL laminate or lacquer?
- Does this color come with a glass front option?
- Is decorative trim and molding available in this color?
- Can I see two doors from the same color to check grain or color match?
The Sage Shaker page, for example, lists “Decorative trim and molding available.” Not every color page lists the same options, so ask for each color you like.
Where do you see these doors in person?
Ask an authorized dealer. Innovation Cabinetry does not sell directly to homeowners. We will match you with a professional in your area when you submit its dealer form. Request samples of two or three styles, hold them side by side and compare under your own light.
Warranty terms are by line. The brochures list 10 years for both EliteCraft and Urban. Confirm the written terms with your dealer. You can read the warranty page for details.

Frequently asked questions
What is a shaker cabinet door?
A shaker door is a five-piece door with a flat panel recessed inside a square frame. The frame is two vertical stiles and two horizontal rails. The recess makes a shadow line that gives the style its look. It works in traditional, transitional and modern kitchens.
What is the difference between shaker and slim shaker?
The frame width. A slim shaker, which Innovation Cabinetry also calls skinny shaker, has narrower frame pieces than a standard shaker. The result looks lighter and more contemporary. Both have a recessed center. Compare door samples side by side to see the difference in person.
Is a flat panel door the same as a slab door?
Yes. Flat panel and slab describe the same thing: a single flat piece with no frame or groove. Innovation Cabinetry calls its Urban Cityscapes doors a flat panel door with European styling. They suit modern and minimal kitchens.
Which door style is easiest to clean?
Flat panel doors are easiest because they have no grooves or corners. Shaker doors are also simple, but dust can collect where the frame meets the center panel. Raised panel doors have the most contours. Follow your dealer's care guide for any finish.
Can you get glass fronts on these doors?
Some. Innovation Cabinetry lists a glass front option, with glass and clips not included, for Classic White and Sage Shaker. Check each color page for the option. Ask your dealer whether glass is available for the color and style you want.
Are shaker doors out of style?
We found no official data on trends, so we cannot say. Shaker is the most common painted door style across Innovation Cabinetry colors, and it appears in both the EliteCraft and Urban lines. The simple frame ages well because it carries little decoration.
