Thermally fused laminate (TFL)
Thermally fused laminate, or TFL, is a printed paper surface bonded to a panel with heat and pressure, which makes a hard, scratch-resistant finish.
TFL is made by melting resin-soaked decorative paper onto a panel. Heat and pressure bond the two. The surface can look like wood grain, a solid color or a stone texture.
TFL is a good option when you want a durable surface that is easy to wipe clean. It does not need paint. Edges are the weak point, so the way a maker finishes them matters. See edge banding.
The Urban brochure says "Resin based TFL is permanently heat bonded to the substrate; it will not peel or fade and has superior impact resistance." Urban boxes have a white TFL interior and exterior, and Cityscapes colors use TFL. Maverick Garageworx uses 3/4 inch TFL furniture board. See Urban colors and the Maverick Garageworx page. Compare with thermofoil.
