What are garage cabinets made of?
Garage cabinets are made of board, metal or plastic. The core and the surface decide how well they handle damp air, scratches and weight. Maverick Garageworx cabinets use 3/4 in. thermally fused laminate (TFL) furniture board, with the decorative surface bonded to both sides, so you can judge the build against a clear spec.
A garage is not a kitchen. It sees tools, wet shoes, spilled oil and heat. In Florida it also sees humid air. UF/IFAS Extension says “Florida is warm and humid,” and that organic materials can be attacked by mildew and bacteria. Metals can rust too.
So ask three questions of any garage cabinet:
- What is the core material, and how thick is it?
- How is the surface attached?
- How are the edges sealed?
The Maverick Garageworx collection answers all three. The brochure says each cabinet is built with durable 3/4 in. TFL furniture board and heavy-duty construction. It lists 18 cabinets, so you can mix base, wall and tall units.
What is thermally fused laminate (TFL)?
TFL is a decorative surface fused to a board core with heat and pressure. It used to be called melamine. The Composite Panel Association says TFL panels have excellent scratch and wear resistance. That suits a space where tools and bins knock into cabinet faces every day.
TFL is made by fusing a resin-impregnated paper sheet directly to a substrate. That makes a finished panel ready to cut. The Composite Panel Association describes TFL as “a decorative surface panel that can be manufactured with enhanced visual and performance characteristics.”
Maverick says its TFL is “low-maintenance” and resists “everyday scratches, moisture, stains, and wear.” Those are the maker’s claims. TFL does not make a cabinet waterproof. The edges still matter, which is the next question.
Why do garage cabinets need sealed edges?
Cut edges are where moisture enters a board. TFL covers the faces, so the cut edges need their own treatment, and good garage cabinets seal them. The Composite Panel Association says TFL panels “typically require a decorative edge treatment.” Maverick uses Invisa-Edge banding to seal them.
The US EPA puts it simply: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” A cabinet that keeps water out of its core stays stronger and cleaner for longer.
Edge banding is the strip or layer on a cut edge. Maverick says Invisa-Edge banding makes a tight seal that helps protect cabinet joints from moisture, dirt and everyday contaminants. The Invisa-Edge flyer says the pre-applied layer is activated with hot air and is free from traditional adhesives.
Check these points on any cabinet you consider:
- Are all visible edges banded, including shelf edges?
- Does the maker explain how the banding is applied?
- Does the maker publish care instructions?
Maverick provides a care and cleaning sheet and an Invisa-Edge explainer on its page.
Why raise garage cabinets off the floor?
Legs lift the cabinet away from the slab, which helps with cleanup and moisture. They also level the box on an uneven floor. Maverick uses heavy-duty stainless steel adjustable legs so each cabinet sits level and stays off the ground.
Garage floors are often not flat. A cabinet on an uneven floor can twist out of square, which makes doors and drawers hard to align.
The Maverick page says its legs “help level cabinets on uneven garage floors, and raise storage off the ground for easier cleanup and added protection from moisture and debris.” The brochure notes that listed heights are the maximum assembled height with feet and leveling legs. Measure your ceiling and door swing with that in mind.
How much weight can garage cabinets hold?
It depends on the cabinet type, and the maker should publish the number. Maverick publishes a maximum load for each drawer base, tall and wall cabinet. The limits above assume the weight is spread evenly. A wall cabinet holds far less than a tall cabinet, so plan heavy items low.
The table shows the Maverick limits. Here is how to use them.
- Put the heaviest gear in drawer bases and tall cabinets.
- Keep wall cabinets for light items. The 15 in. wall cabinet holds up to 60 lbs, and the 30 in. wall cabinet holds up to 120 lbs.
- Spread loads across the shelf or drawer. A single point load is not an even load.
- Drawers matter too. The brochure says the slim metal drawers have soft-close glides that support weights up to 100 lbs.
Weight limits are not the same as wall strength. Follow the installation guide for fastening cabinets to the wall. Ask your installer to check the wall.
Are frameless garage cabinets better?
Frameless cabinets have no face frame in front of the box, so doors and drawers open across the full width. That makes it easier to reach tools and gear. Maverick cabinets are frameless with full-overlay doors and drawer fronts. Whether that is better depends on your layout and what you store.
The Maverick page puts it this way: “Without a face frame restricting the opening, doors and drawers provide full access to shelves, tools, gear, and supplies.” See the glossary entries for frameless construction, and the frameless vs face frame guide for the full comparison.
Because there is no front frame, the box material and the wall fastening matter. Ask the maker how the box is built and how to fasten it.
Will garage cabinets handle Florida humidity?
Choose cabinets that seal out moisture, because Florida air carries plenty of it. UF/IFAS Extension says relative humidity above 70% for long periods can lead to mold problems, especially in stagnant air. Closed, sealed cabinet boxes and raised bases help. Good airflow in the garage helps most.
The UF/IFAS fact sheet on indoor air quality says “levels of relative humidity exceeding 70% during long periods of time can eventually lead to mold problems, especially in stagnant air spaces such as closets.” A packed garage cabinet can act like a closet.
Practical steps:
- Keep wet gear, paint and cleaning supplies out of closed cabinets until dry.
- Wipe up spills fast. Use the cleaners listed on the Maverick care sheet.
- Read the Florida cabinet guide for more on humidity and storms.
How do I plan a garage cabinet layout?
Measure the wall, then choose a mix of base, wall and tall cabinets. Maverick sells base cabinets 15, 24 and 30 inches wide, wall cabinets, and tall cabinets 84 inches high. A coordinating work surface is sold separately. Sketch the wall before you order.
Use this order:
- Measure the wall width, ceiling height and the garage door track.
- Mark outlets, switches and any water heater or panel that needs clear access.
- Place tall cabinets at the ends, base cabinets in the middle, and wall cabinets above the work area.
- Check door swing against a parked vehicle.
- Add a work surface. The brochure lists butcher block countertops in 50, 74 and 98 inch lengths.
The brochure also lists a trash pull-out, filler and metal pulls. The pulls are made of rust-resistant aluminum and are included but not installed. The garage cabinet buying guide has a full checklist.
How are garage cabinets installed?
Maverick cabinets arrive fully assembled, so installation means placing, leveling and fastening them. The Maverick page links an installation guide, a hinge adjustment guide and an installation video. Read all three before you start, and ask your dealer who installs.
Know the returns rule before you install. The Maverick warranty says the cabinetry is deemed accepted once assembly or installation is complete. It says Innovation Cabinetry cannot accept requests for exchanges or returns on items that have been assembled or installed. Inspect every cabinet on delivery, and check the fit before you fasten anything.
Watch the installation video if you plan to install them yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What are garage cabinets made of?
Garage cabinets are usually made of board or metal. Maverick Garageworx cabinets use 3/4 in. thermally fused laminate (TFL) furniture board, with the decorative surface bonded to both sides. Invisa-Edge banding seals the edges. Ask any maker what the core is, how the surface is bonded and how the edges are sealed.
How much weight can garage cabinets hold?
It depends on the cabinet. Maverick lists maximums for an evenly spread load: 225 lbs for a 3-drawer base, 300 lbs for a 4-drawer base, 315 and 420 lbs for the 24 in. and 30 in. tall cabinets, and 60 and 120 lbs for the 15 in. and 30 in. wall cabinets.
Are frameless garage cabinets better?
Frameless cabinets have no face frame, so doors and drawers open to the full width of the box. Maverick says this gives full access to shelves, tools and supplies. Neither style is better in every garage. Pick the one that fits your gear and your wall space.
Do garage cabinets need adjustable legs?
Legs help because garage floors often slope or have uneven spots. Maverick says its heavy-duty stainless steel adjustable legs help level cabinets and raise storage off the ground for easier cleanup and added protection from moisture and debris.
What warranty comes with Maverick Garageworx cabinets?
Maverick has a 5-year limited warranty. Innovation Cabinetry will repair or replace a defective article or part for five years from the date of purchase. It covers residential use in the United States and is nontransferable. Read the warranty page for the full terms and the claim steps.
Do garage cabinets come assembled?
Maverick Garageworx cabinets ship fully assembled, so there is no assembly step. You still need to install them. The brochure says no assembly, and the page links an installation guide, a hinge adjustment guide and an installation video. Ask your dealer who will install them.
