What is the best material for outdoor kitchen cabinets?
The best material depends on your climate and how much upkeep you accept. Stainless steel, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), PVC or resin composites, and sealed wood all work outdoors. Each fails in a different way, so pick for the stress that is worst where you live.
The RTA Cabinet Store, an online seller, wrote an article that sorts materials by climate. It said the material that suits an outdoor kitchen depends largely on the climate of the home. It listed stainless steel for all climates, marine-grade polymer for wet extremes and wood for moderate climates. The article is from 2016, so treat it as a framework, not as current product data.
In Tampa Bay and most of Florida, the stresses are strong sun, frequent rain, high humidity and, near the water, salt in the air. That mix favors materials that do not absorb water and hardware that resists corrosion.
What stresses do outdoor cabinets face?
Outdoor cabinets face five main stresses: water, sun, heat, humidity and salt. A material that handles all five with little upkeep is the easy choice. A material that handles four needs a plan for the fifth.
| Stress | What it does to cabinets | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Rain and splash | Soaks and swells wood-based boxes | A material that does not absorb water |
| Sun (UV) | Fades finish over time | UV-resistant material or topcoat |
| Heat | Stresses finish and joints | Materials made for outdoor temperatures |
| Humidity | Mildew, swelling, corroded fasteners | Sealed or non-absorbent surfaces; drainage |
| Salt air | Pits some metals over time | Higher-grade stainless steel; rinsing |
Which stress matters most at your patio? A covered lanai by a pool sees less sun. A grill island by the Gulf sees more salt. Write down the worst one before you shop.
How does stainless steel perform outdoors?
Stainless steel is common in outdoor kitchens and works in all climates when the cabinet is designed for it. The RTA Cabinet Store article says stainless steel is the most popular choice, with fully enclosed cabinets and weather-proof sealing around drawers and doors. It also says stainless steel is expensive and looks industrial.
The grade matters near salt water. AZoM, a materials information site, says the main weakness of grade 304 is its performance in the presence of chlorides, especially saltwater. In coastal air, the protective layer can break down in spots, and small pits can form. It says grade 316 adds about 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, which improves resistance to chlorides.
That does not mean 304 fails everywhere. It means the site matters. AZoM notes that a grade that performs well indoors may not hold up on an exposed coastal facade. By the water, ask the maker what grade it uses and how to care for it. Rinsing after salt exposure helps any grade.
Stainless steel also shows up in small parts of cabinets made from other materials. Hinges, legs, screws and drawer glides are often stainless, even on non-metal boxes. So the grade question applies to every outdoor cabinet, not only steel ones.
How does HDPE perform outdoors?
HDPE is a plastic, not wood, so it does not rot the way wood can. It suits wet, humid places. It is also a different look and feel from wood or steel, so see a sample first.
The RTA Cabinet Store article says marine-grade polymer cabinets can be made more than just weather-resistant, practically weatherproof, in climates where frequent and unavoidable water is expected. That describes Florida summers well. The marine-grade polymer entry covers the term.
What does Innovation Cabinetry say about Endura?
Innovation Cabinetry makes Endura, its outdoor kitchen line, from HDPE. The company’s brochure says the cabinets are made of 3/4 inch marine-grade, all-weather HDPE and never need sanding or painting. It also says the 3/4 inch HDPE is UV and weather-resistant, and that cabinets will never rot, delaminate or splinter and never need refinishing.
Endura details from the company’s documents:
- Five door styles: Club, Moderno, Oxford, Regent and Sedona
- Fourteen colors in the 2025 brochure: 11 solid matte and 3 Decograin wood-grain textures
- 304 stainless steel 6-way adjustable soft-close hinges
- Adjustable rust-resistant 304 stainless steel legs
- A patented hidden joinery system with no visible fasteners or screws
- A limited lifetime warranty, with hinges and legs at five years
See each style page for photos: Club, Moderno, Oxford, Regent and Sedona.
The company’s material datasheet lists test values, for example density of 0.963 g/cc (ASTM D1505) and a brittleness temperature below minus 75 C. It also says Endura meets ASTM D4976 and contains no VOCs. Treat these as the maker’s published numbers and ask your dealer for the current datasheet.
The brochure says HDPE has a recycling code of 2 and that the cabinets are 100% recyclable. The company also says the HDPE core is sourced from a U.S.-based manufacturer.
How do PVC and resin composite cabinets compare?
Some makers build outdoor cabinets from PVC or resin. NatureKast, a competitor, says every box is built from closed cell PVC welded with PVC cement, and that the doors come from polyurethane resin or high-pressure laminate depending on the collection. It also lists stainless steel hinges and drawer hardware and a UV-stable topcoat.
Note that the box and the door can be different materials, and the label “outdoor cabinet” does not tell you which. When you compare brands, ask three questions:
- What is the box made of?
- What are the doors made of?
- What are the hinges, legs and glides made of?
Then compare the answers across makers, not the marketing names. Each maker states its own warranty, so read those too.
When does wood make sense outdoors?
Sealed wood suits mild climates with shelter and a willing owner. The RTA Cabinet Store article says wood cabinets have classic style and are the most budget-friendly option, but are not quite as durable as the alternatives. It says the key is sealing every piece, inside and out, before assembly.
For Florida, wood outdoors is a hard case. Heat, rain and humidity attack unsealed edges first. If you want a wood look without wood’s upkeep, a wood-grain polymer finish is one route. The Endura Decograin colors White Oak, Brown Walnut and Barnwood Gray follow that idea.
Indoor wood cabinets are not outdoor cabinets. Innovation Cabinetry’s EliteCraft Seaside Dune tear sheet, for example, says it is suitable for all indoor room applications. Do not place indoor lines outside, even under a roof.
What about concrete and stone?
Concrete and stone work best for countertops and islands, not for cabinet boxes. They need a solid base. Many outdoor kitchens pair a stone or concrete top with a cabinet frame made of steel or HDPE.
If you plan a stone top, ask your dealer about support, overhang and leveling for the cabinet line you choose. Endura cabinets have adjustable legs for leveling. See adjustable leg for the term.
How do hardware and fasteners change the answer?
Hardware often fails before the box does. Hinges, legs, screws and glides live in the same weather as the cabinet. A box that never rots does not help if the hinge corrodes.
Compare these parts in writing:
| Part | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Hinges | Material, grade, soft-close, adjustability |
| Legs | Material, load rating, leveling range |
| Drawer glides | Material, rating, warranty |
| Fasteners | Material; are they hidden? |
Endura uses 304 stainless hinges and legs. Optional factory-installed soft-close metal drawer glides have a two-year warranty, per the company’s warranty. Drawer glide ratings differ in the 2023 catalog and the 2025 brochure, so ask the dealer for the current number.
For salt air, ask your dealer how the hinge and leg grade holds up near the coast, and how often to rinse. The maker’s care sheet is the best source.
How do you choose for a Tampa Bay patio?
Start with where the cabinets will stand, then work down the list. Use this short guide to turn the material facts above into a decision.
| Your site | Lean toward | Ask the dealer |
|---|---|---|
| Covered lanai, inland | Any outdoor-rated line | Warranty terms and care sheet |
| Open patio, full sun and rain | HDPE or enclosed stainless steel | UV resistance and color options |
| Waterfront or Gulf-facing | Non-absorbent box and a higher hardware grade | Hardware grade and rinse routine |
| Pool deck with splash | A material that does not absorb water | Drainage and leg height |
Put your top two picks side by side and request a sample of each. Check the box edge, the hinge and the finish in direct sun. A sample in daylight tells you more than any photo.
How do you care for outdoor cabinets?
Clean on a schedule and use the products your maker lists. For Endura, Innovation Cabinetry’s care sheet lists acceptable cleaners as a 10% chlorine bleach dilution, hand washing liquid soap, glass cleaner, ammonia and furniture polish. It names abrasive cleaners to avoid, and says a pressure washer should be no greater than 1500 PSI.
A simple routine:
- Wipe spills and grease when they happen.
- Wash with mild soap and water every month or two, more near salt.
- Rinse well. Do not leave cleaner on hardware.
- Check hinges and legs once a season.
- Re-check the warranty before using any new product.
Does the warranty tell you something?
Yes. A warranty shows what the maker will stand behind, and what it will not. Innovation Cabinetry’s Endura warranty is limited lifetime, with hinges and leveling legs at five years and optional metal drawer glides at two. The document covers residential use in the United States, applies to the original purchaser, and is not transferable. Remedies are repair, replace or refund.
Compare warranties with other makers line by line. Look at parts covered, parts excluded, who is covered, how long, and what happens if you repaint or modify the cabinet. One competitor, for example, says repainting counts as a customer modification and would not be covered. See the warranty page for Innovation Cabinetry’s terms.
Gas grills and heat need their own care. Check your grill and cabinet instructions, and confirm clearances with a licensed installer and your local building department before you build.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best material for outdoor kitchen cabinets?
It depends on your climate and how much upkeep you will do. One seller calls stainless steel the most popular choice in all climates, marine-grade polymer best for very wet places, and sealed wood best for moderate ones. In Florida, humidity and sun point toward polymer or stainless steel.
Is HDPE good for outdoor cabinets?
Yes, it is made for it. High-density polyethylene does not soak up water. Innovation Cabinetry says its Endura cabinets use 3/4 inch marine-grade HDPE that never rots, delaminates or splinters. HDPE has a different look from wood, so view a sample in person.
Is 304 stainless steel good for coastal use?
It can work, but salt is its weak spot. AZoM says the main weakness of 304 is its performance in the presence of chlorides, especially saltwater. Grade 316 adds molybdenum for better resistance. If you live by the water, ask what grade the hinges and legs use.
Do outdoor cabinets need to be sealed or painted?
Wood does, on every face, inside and out, before assembly. HDPE does not. Innovation Cabinetry says Endura cabinets never need sanding or painting. Check your maker's care sheet, because repainting can void a warranty on some brands.
Can I use indoor cabinets outside?
Not unless the maker says so. Indoor lines are made for indoor rooms. Innovation Cabinetry's EliteCraft Seaside Dune tear sheet says it is suitable for all indoor room applications. For a patio or poolside kitchen, choose a line made for outdoor use, such as Endura.
How do I clean outdoor cabinets?
Follow the care sheet for your line. Innovation Cabinetry lists mild cleaners for Endura, such as hand washing liquid soap, glass cleaner and a 10% bleach dilution, and warns against abrasive cleaners. It limits pressure washing to no more than 1500 PSI. Rinse hardware after exposure to salt.
Do outdoor cabinets carry a warranty?
Yes, but terms vary by maker and by part. Innovation Cabinetry gives Endura a limited lifetime warranty, with hinges, leveling legs and factory hardware covered for 5 years. Optional drawer glides carry 2 years. Read the full document, because exclusions and residential-use limits apply.
