What is a lanai or summer kitchen?
A lanai kitchen sits on a covered or screened porch, and a summer kitchen is any outdoor cooking space that keeps heat out of the house. Both give you a place to cook and eat outside in Florida. Both face heat, humidity and sudden rain.
The National Weather Service Tampa Bay says the rainy season runs from May 25 to October 10 for most of West Central Florida, with “high temperatures in the upper 80s to middle 90s.” Your summer kitchen will see that weather for months. Plan around it from the start.
A lanai is partly protected. A screened enclosure blocks bugs but not blown rain, and a solid roof blocks sun but traps heat and fumes. Each setup changes the answer to the questions below.
Which layout works best for a lanai kitchen?
An L-shape or a straight run along one wall works best in most lanais. Keep the cook, the sink and the cold storage within a few steps of each other. Leave clear walkways so people can pass without crossing the cook.
| Layout | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Straight run along one wall | Narrow lanais | Little counter space between appliances |
| L-shape | Corner of a lanai | The inside corner needs a smart corner cabinet |
| Island | Large open patios | Needs utilities routed to the island |
| Peninsula | Mid-size lanais that seat guests | Grill smoke can drift to seating |
Think about wind direction. Put the grill where smoke leaves the space instead of into the seating. Keep the grill clear of screens, soffits and anything that burns.

How do you handle heat, fumes and ventilation?
Move air, add shade and never trap cooking fumes. The CPSC explains that carbon monoxide “is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels, including coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas.” A roofed or screened lanai can hold those fumes in.
The CPSC also says to make sure “appliances are installed and operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes.” Follow that rule for every grill, burner and heater. Ask your installer and your local building department what your enclosure needs. Do not guess.
Humidity makes heat worse. The National Weather Service gives this example: at 96°F and 65% relative humidity, the heat index, or how hot it feels, is 121°F. Plan for cross breezes, ceiling fans and shade. Cook early or late on the hottest days.
What gas, power and water does a lanai kitchen need?
A lanai kitchen needs a gas supply or propane tank, power for lighting and appliances, and water only if you add a sink. Each has its own rules. Licensed trades should do gas, electrical and plumbing, and the permit rules depend on your city or county.
| Utility | Typical use | Plan ahead |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas or propane | Grill, side burner | Shut-off access, tank storage, installer sign-off |
| Electric | Lights, refrigerator, outlets | Weather-rated outlets and protection set by your electrician |
| Water and drain | Sink, ice maker | Drain slope and a way to drain water away from cabinets |
Run lines before you set cabinets. Leave access panels where a technician can reach valves. The Endura RTA line includes a propane pull-out cabinet, a wastebasket pull-out and a refrigerator panel, so ask your dealer which pieces fit your plan.
Which cabinets suit a Florida lanai?
Pick cabinets built for moisture, sun and cleanup. Endura cabinets are 3/4 in. marine-grade HDPE, a plastic that Innovation Cabinetry says will never rot, delaminate or splinter. The hinges and legs are 304 stainless steel, and the brochure calls the legs rust-resistant.
Here are the Endura details that matter on a lanai:
- Body: HDPE that never needs sanding or painting, per the brochure.
- Hinges: 6-way adjustable soft-close hinges in 304 stainless steel.
- Legs: adjustable legs for uneven slabs. Total overall height adjusts from 34 in. to 35.875 in.
- Doors: five styles: Club, Moderno, Oxford, Regent and Sedona.
- Colors: 14 finishes in the 2025 brochure, including 11 solid matte colors and 3 wood-grain Decograin options.
- Toe-kick: an optional clip-on toe-kick.
Check the Endura specification guide for cabinet widths and depths, and match them to your grill and your counter overhang. Then confirm the plan with your installer.
Look at the Endura Sedona for a Shaker-style profile or the Endura Moderno for a sleek, angular look. Read the outdoor kitchen cabinet materials guide to compare materials before you decide.
How do you protect a lanai kitchen from storms and humidity?
Clear loose items before storms, rinse salt and dirt off cabinets, and keep drains open. A lanai gives partial cover but not full protection. Wind can drive rain in, and humid air reaches every surface.
Our post on hurricane season and your outdoor kitchen gives a storm checklist. The post on salt air and outdoor cabinets covers cleaning near the coast. Both apply to a lanai.
Endura carries a limited lifetime warranty, with 5 years on hinges, legs and factory-installed hardware. The warranty applies to residential use. Register your warranty after you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is a summer kitchen?
A summer kitchen is a second kitchen outside the main house, usually on a lanai, patio or porch. It keeps cooking heat and smoke out of the house during the hot months. In Florida, many families use one for most of the year.
Can I cook with a gas grill on a screened lanai?
Only if the appliance maker, your installer and your local building department allow it for your exact enclosure. Cooking fuels produce carbon monoxide, and screened or roofed spaces can trap fumes. Get the clearance and ventilation rules in writing before you install.
What cabinet material works on a lanai?
Choose a material built for moisture and outdoor exposure. Endura cabinets are 3/4 in. marine-grade HDPE with 304 stainless steel hinges and legs. Even a covered lanai sees humidity, rain blown in by wind and splashes from the sink.
Do I need a permit for a lanai kitchen?
Often yes, especially for gas lines, electrical circuits and plumbing. Rules vary by city and county. Ask your local building department before work starts, and use licensed trades for gas, electrical and plumbing.
How do I keep a lanai kitchen cool?
Add fans, shade and airflow, and plan to cook early or late in the day. The National Weather Service heat index shows that humidity makes heat feel worse. Put hot appliances where the breeze reaches them, and keep drinks and refrigeration within reach.
