# RTA vs assembled cabinets

RTA cabinets ship flat and you, or your installer, assemble them. Assembled cabinets arrive built and ready to hang. One seller says the same style is the same product either way. RTA saves shipping and cost, while assembled saves labor. Check warranty and certification, because KCMA does not certify flat pack.

## Who does the building

RTA means ready to assemble. The parts ship flat. Assembled cabinets are built before they ship.

## Same cabinet, different box

One seller says that when a style comes both ways, the materials match. Check this for each line.

## Certification gap

The KCMA certificate for Innovation Cabinetry lists preassembled lines and says flat pack is not certified.

## Delivery and handling

Flat packs are compact and ship with less damage risk. Assembled cabinets are bulkier and need a careful check on delivery.

## What is the difference between RTA and assembled cabinets?

RTA stands for ready to assemble. RTA cabinets ship as flat-pack boxes, and someone puts them together on site. Assembled cabinets are built before they ship and arrive ready to hang. The cabinet design can be the same either way.

Kitchen Cabinet Kings, an online seller, explains that RTA cabinets ship as flat-pack boxes that you put together on-site, while assembled cabinets are built before they ship and arrive ready to hang. The [RTA](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/glossary/rta) and [assembled cabinet](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/glossary/assembled-cabinet) glossary entries give short definitions.

Neither format is a quality grade. They are two ways to deliver a cabinet. The choice affects:

- Who spends the time on assembly
- How the cabinet travels and how much it can be damaged on the way
- Whether a warranty or certification applies to that format
- What you can return if something is wrong

## Are RTA and assembled cabinets the same quality?

They can be. When the same style is offered both ways, one seller says the plywood box, dovetail drawers, soft-close hardware and finish are the same. The only difference is who assembles the box. That is one seller’s statement about its own products, so check each line.

This point matters because some brands treat RTA as a separate, cheaper product. Others use one design in two formats. You cannot tell which from the word “RTA.” Ask your dealer:

1. Is the RTA version made from the same box material as the assembled one?
2. Are the hinges and glides the same?
3. Does the same warranty apply to both?
4. Is the line certified in both formats?

Compare the answers in writing. If the dealer cannot answer, ask for the spec sheet for each format.

### What does the KCMA certificate say about flat pack?

This is the part that surprises many buyers. The KCMA certificate for Innovation Cabinetry (number 25145, issued October 7, 2025) lists named preassembled lines, such as Shaker White, Classic White, Bayport and Ultra. It says the manufacturer is authorized to apply KCMA seals to the factory assembled lines listed. It also says that flat pack (unassembled) cabinets, if sold by this manufacturer, are not certified.

So the safe reading is plain. If you want a certified cabinet, buy a listed preassembled line. If you buy flat pack from the same brand, do not assume the KCMA seal covers it. KCMA A161.1 is the standard that tests structural integrity, moisture resistance, hardware performance and finish durability. The [KCMA certification](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/glossary/kcma-certification) entry explains the seal.

The certificate expires on November 30, 2026, and KCMA says it may be updated at any time. Ask your dealer for the current list.

## How much do RTA cabinets save?

Sellers say RTA costs less, mainly because shipping flat is cheaper and the factory skips assembly labor. One seller, Kitchen Cabinet Kings, says RTA cabinets typically cost 15-20% less than the same cabinet ordered as assembled. That figure is for that seller’s own products and may not apply to any other brand.

Innovation Cabinetry publishes no prices, and dealers set them. So the only honest way to compare is to ask your dealer to quote the same layout in each format, then add the missing costs.

Add these to the RTA side before you decide:

- Your time, or the cost of a handyperson or installer to assemble
- Extra hardware or replacement parts if something is damaged during assembly
- The risk that a mistake is not covered by the warranty

And add these to the assembled side:

- Higher freight, because built boxes take more space
- A careful receiving inspection, because built boxes are easier to dent in transit

## How long does RTA assembly take, and what tools do you need?

Plan on a screwdriver or cordless drill, a rubber mallet and a clean floor. Kitchen Cabinet Kings estimates 10 to 20 minutes per cabinet once you have the hang of it, with the first cabinet taking 30 to 45 minutes. That is its own estimate for its own cabinets.

Your timeline depends on the line. Parts, hardware and instructions differ. Innovation Cabinetry publishes assembly videos and guides, so use them. Visit the [assembly videos](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/assembly-videos) page before you open the first box.

A simple plan keeps assembly smooth:

1. Unbox one cabinet and lay out the parts. Check them against the list.
2. Read the guide for that cabinet type. Base, wall and tall cabinets differ.
3. Assemble on a clean, flat surface. Do not force a part that does not fit.
4. Set the finished box aside, labeled by its location in the plan.
5. Repeat, and check each box for square before the next.
6. Hold the hinges and doors until the boxes are mounted, then adjust.

A job with many cabinets can take hours across a day or a weekend. Plan the space for boxes, and keep the packaging until you have inspected every part.

## How do delivery and damage risk compare?

Flat packs are compact and well protected, so they usually arrive undamaged. Assembled cabinets take more space and are more exposed. Kitchen Cabinet Kings says fully assembled cabinets are larger, heavier and more exposed during transit than compact flat-pack boxes.

For either format, inspect at delivery:

- Open every box while the driver is still there, if the carrier allows it.
- Note damage on the delivery receipt before you sign.
- Photograph the damage and the packaging.
- Contact your dealer the same day.

Innovation Cabinetry’s return policy sets rules you should read before you order. It says returns must be made within 45 days of the invoice date, that cabinets must be in their original boxes, and that customized or assembled cabinets cannot be returned under any circumstance. It also says products damaged in transit that shipped through a freight company cannot be returned to Innovation. Read the [policies](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/policies) page and ask your dealer how the freight claim process works.

## How do warranties differ?

Warranties are set by line and by format, so read the one for your cabinet. Innovation Cabinetry publishes a separate 10-year limited warranty document for its RTA cabinetry. It says Ready to Assemble products shall be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use for ten years from the date of shipment, and that hardware shall be free from defects.

Here is how the main terms line up:

Line

Format

Warranty as the company states it

Indoor cabinetry (EliteCraft, Urban)

EliteCraft: flat pack or fully assembled

10-year limited

Endura outdoor

Fully assembled or RTA (see below)

Limited lifetime, with hinges and legs at 5 years

Maverick Garageworx

Fully assembled

5-year limited

Source: Innovation Cabinetry warranty documents and brochures. See the warranty page for the full wording and the warranty registration entry for how to register.

Two cautions. First, a warranty covers defects, not mistakes made during assembly. Seller terms vary, and Kitchen Cabinet Kings says damage during assembly is not covered by its own warranty. Ask whether yours is the same. Second, the warranty is for the original residential buyer and is not transferable, per the company’s documents.

## Does Innovation Cabinetry sell RTA cabinets?

Yes, in some lines. The EliteCraft brochure says “FLAT PACK OR FULLY ASSEMBLED.” The company also has a 10-year RTA warranty document and sells a separate Endura RTA line, with assembly guides for grill bases, base and wall cabinets, a refrigerator panel, a toe-kick, filler, vent cover and more. Maverick Garageworx is sold fully assembled, and the brochure says “No assembly. No hassle.”

The Endura line needs a note. Older Endura pages say the cabinets arrive fully assembled and ready to install with minimal tools and hardware. The newer [Endura RTA assembly guides](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/endura-rta-landing-page) show a ready-to-assemble option. Ask your dealer which format applies to your order and size.

The indoor lines, EliteCraft and Urban, are frameless cabinets. See frameless vs face frame cabinets for how construction affects the choice. For Endura, the guide on [outdoor kitchen cabinet materials](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/guides/outdoor-kitchen-cabinet-materials) explains why the material matters.

## Who should assemble and install RTA cabinets?

Assembly and installation are two jobs, and they can have two different people. You can assemble boxes yourself and hire an installer to hang them. You can also hire one trade to do both. What matters is that someone owns each step and the cabinets are checked before they go on the wall.

For its Endura RTA line, Innovation Cabinetry’s installation guide says installation should be handled by a licensed contractor or an experienced cabinetry professional. It also recommends a minimum of two people, and says to check local building codes first. That advice is a good model for any large cabinet: heavy boxes need two sets of hands.

If you hire help, confirm these points before the work starts:

- Who is responsible for a missing or damaged part
- Who adjusts the hinges and drawer fronts after hanging
- Whether the price covers cleanup and haul-away of the packaging

## When is assembled the better choice?

Assembled is better when you want the least on-site work, want the certified preassembled line, or do not have the time or help. RTA is better when you can assemble, want compact freight, or have a trade installer who prefers flat packs.

Choose RTA if

Choose assembled if

You can assemble, or hire someone who can

You want cabinets ready to hang on delivery

Freight size or storage is a concern

The KCMA-listed preassembled line matters to you

You are ordering for a crew that assembles on site

The timeline leaves no room for assembly

You can inspect and organize many flat boxes

You want to avoid any assembly mistakes

If you are unsure, order a sample door and ask your dealer for the spec sheets of both formats. Then decide on certification, warranty and handling together, not on price alone.

## What should you do before you order?

Use this short checklist:

1. Write down the line, door style and color you want.
2. Ask the dealer which formats are available for that exact choice.
3. Ask for the warranty document for each format.
4. Ask whether the format is on the current KCMA certificate.
5. Ask who inspects the delivery and who handles a freight claim.
6. Decide who will assemble and install, and get that in writing.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between RTA and assembled cabinets?

RTA cabinets ship as flat-pack boxes that you put together on-site. Assembled cabinets are built before they ship and arrive ready to hang. The same design can come either way. The real difference is who does the assembly work and how the parts travel.

### Are RTA cabinets lower quality than assembled?

Not by default. One seller says that when a style comes in both formats, the materials, hardware and finish are the same. Quality depends on the line. Compare box material, joinery and hardware, and ask the dealer for the spec sheet and warranty for that format.

### Does KCMA certify RTA cabinets?

The KCMA certificate for Innovation Cabinetry covers named preassembled lines. It says flat pack (unassembled) cabinets, if sold by this manufacturer, are not certified. If certification matters to you, ask the dealer which format of your chosen line is listed.

### How long does it take to assemble RTA cabinets?

It depends on the cabinet and your skill. One seller estimates 10 to 20 minutes per cabinet once you have the hang of it, with the first taking longer. A larger kitchen can take hours. Ask whether your dealer or installer offers assembly.

### Can a contractor assemble RTA cabinets for me?

Yes. Many buyers order RTA and hire a contractor or handyperson to assemble and install. That keeps the shipping benefit while removing the work from you. Confirm who is responsible if a part is damaged or missing before the work starts.

### Can I return assembled cabinets?

Innovation Cabinetry's return policy says customized or assembled cabinets cannot be returned under any circumstance. Read the full policy first, including the 45-day return window and the original-box rules for unassembled items, and ask your dealer how it applies.

### Does Innovation Cabinetry sell RTA?

Yes. The company has an RTA warranty document and says its EliteCraft line is available as flat pack or fully assembled. Its Endura outdoor line also has RTA assembly guides. Your dealer can confirm which lines and colors come in which format.
