# RTA Cabinets: The Hidden Costs and the Real Savings

RTA cabinets can cost less than assembled ones, but you take on work and risk. You build every box, you carry the cost of assembly mistakes, and you must check freight on delivery. One seller reports RTA at 15-20% less. Count your hours and your risk before you count savings.

## Are RTA cabinets really cheaper?

Often, but not always. One seller, Kitchen Cabinet Kings, says RTA costs 15-20% less than the same cabinet ordered assembled. The savings come from skipped factory labor and cheaper flat-pack freight. That is one seller’s data. Treat it as an example, not a promise.

[RTA](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/glossary/rta) means ready to assemble. The cabinet ships as flat parts that you or your installer build. An [assembled cabinet](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/glossary/assembled-cabinet) arrives built.

The headline saving is real for some buyers. The question is what you pay in other ways to get it. The table below lists the common ones.

## How much time does assembly take?

Plan on hours, not minutes. The same seller reports 10 to 20 minutes per cabinet once you learn the steps. It also says to budget 3 to 4 hours for an average kitchen of 12 to 15 cabinets. The first cabinet takes longer, and it quotes 30 to 45 minutes.

Those numbers describe that seller’s cabinets, with hinges and glides pre-attached. Your line may differ. Ask your dealer for the assembly guide of your exact cabinet before you commit.

Time has a price even if you do not write a check. A weekend of assembly may delay your installer. A contractor who bills by the hour may charge for the same work. Ask who is building the boxes, and when.

## What happens if I make a mistake?

You carry the risk. The seller’s page says the fix is your responsibility if you overtighten a screw and strip a hole, or misalign a panel. Its warranty covers manufacturing defects, but damage during assembly is not covered.

That is one seller’s rule. Your cabinet’s warranty may read differently. Innovation Cabinetry’s warranty terms differ by line. The indoor RTA warranty document states a ten-year limited term, and Endura has its own lifetime limited warranty. Read the one for your line on the [warranty page](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/warranty), and ask your dealer how assembly damage is handled.

Slow, careful work prevents most mistakes. These habits help:

1. Open every box on delivery and count the parts against the packing list.
2. Read the full assembly guide before you touch a screwdriver.
3. Build one cabinet first and check it for square.
4. Tighten by hand at the end, not with a drill on high torque.
5. Keep all packaging until every cabinet is checked.

## Can I return RTA cabinets once they are built?

No. Innovation Cabinetry’s return policy says customized or assembled cabinets cannot be returned under any circumstance. Returns must be made in original boxes within 45 days of the invoice date and must be inspected first. Check every part before you build.

The policy also covers freight. It says products damaged in transit that shipped F.O.B. from Innovation’s warehouse through a freight company cannot be returned to Innovation. The policy points buyers to a claims process with the freight company.

Kitchen Cabinet Kings gives similar advice for its own deliveries: inspect every cabinet carefully and note any damage on the bill of lading before the driver leaves. Do this on any freight order, RTA or assembled. See [policies](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/policies) for the full text, and ask your dealer how your order ships.

## Does RTA change KCMA certification?

Yes. The 2025 KCMA certificate for Innovation Cabinetry lists named preassembled lines. It says flat pack (unassembled) cabinets, if sold by the manufacturer, are not certified. So an RTA order does not carry the certificate’s coverage.

Read our post on [what KCMA certification means](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/blog/what-kcma-certification-means) for the details. The glossary entry on [KCMA certification](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/glossary/kcma-certification) gives the short version. If certification matters to your project, ask for an assembled, listed line.

## When is RTA a smart choice?

RTA fits buyers who have the time and a clear layout. A simple kitchen with standard sizes suits it well. So does a job where someone skilled is already on site. It fits less well when the plan has odd angles, tight deadlines or no one to check the work.

The seller says assembled cabinets give you more flexibility for unusual angles or custom fillers, because the factory handles the tricky parts. A [filler](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/glossary/filler) closes gaps next to a wall, so tricky runs depend on good planning either way.

Ask yourself three questions:

1. Who will build the boxes, and what do they charge for the time?
2. Does my plan have standard sizes and square walls?
3. Do I need a certified, factory-assembled line?

If you answer “me, yes, no,” RTA may save you money. Otherwise, price the assembled option beside it.

## How do I compare the two fairly?

Compare total project cost, not box price. Add the assembly labor, the extra days, the risk of damage and the loss of returns. Then compare the warranty for each line. Our [RTA vs assembled guide](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/guides/rta-vs-assembled-cabinets) lays out the full comparison.

Innovation Cabinetry’s [Endura](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/endura) outdoor line also has RTA assembly guides. The [Endura RTA assembly and installation guide](https://innovationcabinetry.multisites.ai/guides/endura-rta-assembly-and-installation) covers that route.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are RTA cabinets really cheaper?

One seller says RTA costs 15-20% less than the same cabinet assembled, because you skip factory labor and flat-pack ships cheaper. That is one seller's data, not a rule. Your savings depend on the line, the dealer and what your install adds.

### How long does it take to assemble RTA cabinets?

One seller says 10 to 20 minutes per cabinet once you learn the steps, with 3 to 4 hours for a kitchen of 12 to 15 cabinets. The first box takes longer. Your time depends on the cabinet and your tools.

### What if I damage a cabinet while assembling it?

That risk is yours. One seller's warranty covers manufacturing defects but not damage during assembly. Read the warranty for your own line before you order, and ask your dealer how defects and assembly damage are handled.

### Are RTA cabinets KCMA certified?

The 2025 KCMA certificate for Innovation Cabinetry says flat pack (unassembled) cabinets, if sold by the manufacturer, are not certified. The certificate covers named factory-assembled lines. Ask your dealer for the line name.

### Can I return RTA cabinets after I assemble them?

Innovation Cabinetry's return policy says customized or assembled cabinets cannot be returned under any circumstance. Open and check every box before you build. Ask your dealer for the full return terms.
